Expansion details and product lineup
At a dedicated hour-long panel during New York Comic Con, Wizards of the Coast officially announced the first 2027 Universes Beyond expansion for Magic: The Gathering: Marvel’s Darkhold Destiny. The set is designed to pit legendary Marvel figures like Doctor Strange, Thor, and Ghost Rider against powerful cosmic villains, including Hela and Dormammu.
The product lineup for the expansion will cater to various playstyles, featuring both normal and Collector booster packs. For players of the Commander format, the release will include four pre-constructed commander decks themed around Marvel's heroes and villains, one of which will focus on the Midnight Sons. During the presentation, several key cards were showcased, including Gargantos, the titular Darkhold, and a version of Magic who transforms into Darkchild.
New mechanics and original storytelling
Darkhold Destiny is set to introduce significant gameplay elements, most notably the Vengeance mechanic. Described as an Adventure-like feature, Vengeance allows players to cast spells directly from their graveyard, which subsequently returns the permanent the spell is attached to back to the battlefield. Additionally, the expansion marks the return of the Arcane subtype for spells.
The narrative driving this set is an original story co-created by designers from both Marvel and Wizards of the Coast. To deepen this lore, a brand-new character created specifically for this set will be introduced to the Marvel universe via a Marvel Infinity comic series, which is scheduled to begin in February.
Release schedule and availability
The Marvel-themed expansion is slated for a 2027 release. Darkhold Destiny will officially launch on April 9, with products made available through both local game stores and big-box retailers.
